How to crochet a chain stitch (ch) for lefties

The chain stitch (ch) is often used to increase the height of a new row, to create embellishments like hair for a doll, or to add a hole to a piece like to make a basket handle. If a chain stitch is the first stitch in a pattern,that’s your cue to make a “foundation chain”. The only difference between a foundation chain and a
regular chain stitch is that it starts with a slip knot.

To make a chain stitch in crochet, yarn over. Pull the yarn through the loop on the hook. There should be one loop left on the hook.

To count chain stitches, start by laying your foundation chain on a table and look for the horizontal 'V' shape of each stitch. Each "V" is a chain. It's important to carefully count your chain before continuing with your project.

For double crochet, you need to make 3 chain stitches. First, wrap the yarn around your hook from back to front and then pull it through the existing loop. That is your first chain stitch. Repeat this twice more and now you have 3 chain stitches for double crochet.
